Learn how to raise bees in your backyard and understand how much it costs to start beekeeping. This 4-hour course is the perfect DIY beekeeping guide. It will answer your questions about honeybee biology, beekeeping equipment and suit options, and what to expect during your first year of beekeeping.
This course is perfect for anyone interested in starting a worthwhile hobby that can last a lifetime. At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize the four stages of honeybee lifecycle and know what they do
- Describe the honeybee colony lifecycle and its goals through the year
- Consider different races of bees when choosing queens for their hives
- Identify and acquire equipment needs for beekeeping
- Recognize a good spot to place a bee yard
- Purchase bees and properly install packages or nucs
- Evaluate maintenance needs required for beekeeping and recognize when to perform those tasks
- Recognize and manage the pests common to beehives
Texas law, effective January 1, 2012, made it possible for beekeeping to qualify for an ag valuation on property taxes but rules vary by county. If you own between 5 and 20 acres and are interested in raising bees, you may qualify for an ag exemption.
